Leveraging Violence Risk Assessments to Increase Safety and Manage Threats

At NABITA, we prioritize creating safe and secure environments for students, faculty, and staff. When individuals exhibit concerning behavior, schools must carefully assess the risk to determine the most effective strategies for threat management.

Join Linda Abbott, L.M.H.C., Aaron L. Austin, Ed.D., and Tim Cason, M.Ed., for an insightful session on using Violence Risk Assessments (VRAs) to enhance safety and mitigate threats.

In this virtual session, participants will:

  • Learn the process for issuing a VRA, including identifying when it is needed, notifying the individual involved, and managing situations where the individual declines to engage.
  • Understand the key components of an effective VRA process, including gathering background information, conducting an effective interview, using a standardized tool, and mitigating bias.
  • Clarify the role of a Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT), outlining what it can and cannot do with the outcome and results of the VRA.
