Have we come to ask and expect too much of the police in our society? Yes, particularly when the task at hand is more akin to managing a mental health crisis or non-violent disturbance, performing conflict mediation, or responding to pre-crime calls where someone is ‘worried’ about another’s behavior. We see police officers increasingly asked to operate beyond their training, expertise, and public safety role. Do we really want our police officers called to regulate bird watchers, referee neighbor arguments, or extinguish a BBQ at the beach?
