A Structured, Empathetic Response to Student Deaths on Campus

A NABITA Tip of the Week by Aaron Austin, Ed.D.

One of the most emotionally taxing responsibilities a Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) will face is supporting their institution through the death of a student. BITs assist in facilitating coordinated communication and help ensure necessary steps are taken to support the student’s family, friends, and campus community. By establishing protocols in advance, institutions can support grieving families, students, and employees while swiftly and thoughtfully addressing logistical and emotional challenges.

NABITA consultants explored this topic at a recent members-only Talking BITs event. Members can watch the recording by clicking here or logging in to their My NABITA portal.
