K-12 Risk Rubric

Monday, December 1 | 10:00am-5:00pm ET

This one-day certification course is designed to equip educators and school administrators with a standardized approach to risk assessment. Through interactive instruction and practical case studies, participants will gain a deep understanding of the NABITA K-12 Risk Rubric, facilitating the development of accurate risk assessments and effective interventions for K-12 students.

A risk rubric serves as a comprehensive tool to evaluate any risk a student might face. Students face a variety of risks in K-12 settings, including life-altering events, social difficulties, bullying, and emotional and mental health concerns. NABITA’s Risk Rubric provides an objective and quantifiable tool that can gauge the severity and nature of these risks and an individual’s propensity to violence or self-harm. K-12 Structured Interview for Violence Risk Assessment (SIVRA)

Tuesday, December 2-Wednesday, December 3 | 10:00am-5:00pm ET

Originally developed in 2012, the current version of SIVRA taught in this course is an enhanced version featuring a refined assessment system focusing on 21 risk factors for violence, grounded in the most recent research. It includes an improved user guide, along with supplemental materials such as an interview template and suggested interview questions. Users familiar with the previous SIVRA-35 will find the new tool better organized, with clearer descriptions of risk factors and easier scoring.

This two-day certification course provides in-depth training on using the SIVRA tool in K-12 settings. Participants will learn how to conduct an effective interview and gather information to evaluate an individual’s risk of harm to others using the SIVRA. Additionally, they will practice applying the SIVRA to videos demonstrating violence risk assessment interviews. NABITA’s expert faculty members will also discuss strategies for assessing credibility, how to phrase questions to probe for specific risk and protective factors, and how to gather information from collateral sources. Building an Individualized K-12 Threat Management Plan

Friday, December 4 | 10:00am-5:00pm ET

After completing our K-12 Structured Interview for Violence Risk Assessment (SIVRA) course, participants are equipped with the necessary skills to assess a broad spectrum of risks posed by individuals. This course not only broadens that skill set but also empowers practitioners to apply assessment findings effectively. Participants will learn how to manage and mitigate risks identified during the Violence Risk Assessment (VRA), enhance protective measures, and bolster an individual’s capacity to positively impact their campus community.

Using case studies, this training offers deep insights into engaging with individuals post-VRA. NABITA’s expert faculty members will present interventions such as collaborating with non-clinical case managers, implementing progressive sanctions through the conduct process, using student affairs professionals as support resources, and engaging in safety planning with law enforcement or security professionals.
