TIP OF THE WEEK

Avoiding Groupthink in Your BIT Meetings

Groupthink is the psychological phenomenon that occurs when groups try to minimize conflict and reach a consensus without fully reviewing alternative explanations or viewpoints. Buller (2010) describes it this way: “Groupthink occurs when superficial concord and agreement are prized even more than candor” (p. 1). Behavioral Intervention Teams should avoid quickly coming to unanimous decisions without fully exploring all potential options just to get the meeting over quickly or avoid rehashing frequent arguments. It is unhealthy for a group to develop action plans without exploring all the different facets of a particular case. To learn more about Groupthink and how to avoid it, click here.
