NaBITA Position Statement on Notation of Suspension and Expulsion on College and University Transcripts
by Gregory Elliott, MA, LPC, and Peggy S. Scott, Ed.D., LPC-S, on behalf of the NaBITA Advisory Board
The Behavioral Intervention Team Association (NaBITA) is a membership association for those who staff campus behavioral intervention and threat assessment teams. Every day, these teams are tasked with manging students and employees who pose a direct threat of harm to themselves and/or others, all while balancing the mandate for campus safety witht he protection of individual rights.
Colleges and universities experiencing student behavioral issues have a variety of mechanisms to address these behaviors. The most common include: behavioral intervention; definied conduct proceedings which result in sanctions ranging from warning to expulsion; and allowing the student to take a leave of absence from the school to address health and wellness concerns. The course of action chosen by the institution or student often results in differing statuses for the student moving forward, with respect to readmission, return, or transfer to another institution.

Newly Updated Threat Assessment Tool
These events will be one of the first opportunities to train on the newly-updated NaBITA Threat Assessment Tool. The NaBITA Threat Assessment Tool was first introduced in 2009. It now commands respect as the tool most commonly used by campus behavioral intervention and threat assessment teams. Given the prominence it has achieved, we at NaBITA are mindful of our ongoing obligation to update the tool, validate it, and assure that it continues to reflect best practices. While our trainings and our literature describing the use and application of the tool have evolved consistently to date, this marks the first substantial revision to the tool itself, and an update of the 2009 Whitepaper that first introduced the tool to the field. Be among the first users to receive updated training and case studies!
Interested in learning more about the training and updates to the threat assessment tool? Faculty members Scott Lewis and Brian Van Brunt have recorded a 20-minute overview of the training to help you decide if registering for one of our summer training events is right for you. Newly published faculty guide aids college professors addressing aggressive behavior in the classroom
College and university faculty are asked to serve an increasingly diverse and at-risk population of students. The classroom is now the scene of disruptive and dangerous behaviors that range from speaking out of turn to the misuse of technology to potentially aggressive and threatening behaviors. Written by Brian Van Brunt, Ed.D. and W. Scott Lewis, J.D., A Faculty Guide to Addressing Disruptive and Dangerous Behavior provides the practical ideas and guidance necessary to manage and mitigate these behaviors, from two respected professionals who've developed and implemented the field's best practices. Grounded in research and theory that addresses the interplay of mental health, substance abuse and aggression that may enter the college classroom, this accessible book serves as a necessary guide for busy faculty members facing challenging situations in their classrooms.
For more information on the book, click here.
To invite the authors to speak with your faculty, contact Alisha DiGiandomenico at (610) 644-3387.
