Tip of the Week

Who is Qualified to Conduct a Threat Assessment?

by Brian Van Brunt, Ed.D.

I recently received the following questions from one of our community college members, and thought the responses would be helpful, not only to other 2-year institutions but all of NaBITA's membership.

Do most colleges refer off campus for a threat assessment?  Is a threat assessment only conducted by a Forensic Psychologist, or could a Master level LPC or Licensed Clinical Social Worker conduct a threat assessment?

Colleges are struggling to figure out what to do, to be frank. There really isn’t one set of approaches being used across the United States. Some larger schools with access to resources are hiring specialists and training their staff. Others that have access to local specialists use them for referrals. The challenge with using a forensic specialist is ensuring they have experience in working with assessing violence in college students. The term forensic often refers to those who specialize in court-involved cases, which may or may not be helpful for your needs....

Newly Updated Threat Assessment Tool
These events will be one of the first opportunities to train on the newly-updated NaBITA Threat Assessment Tool.  The NaBITA Threat Assessment Tool was first introduced in 2009.  It now commands respect as the tool most commonly used by campus behavioral intervention and threat assessment teams.  Given the prominence it has achieved, we at NaBITA are mindful of our ongoing obligation to update the tool, validate it, and assure that it continues to reflect best practices.  While our trainings and our literature describing the use and application of the tool have evolved consistently to date, this marks the first substantial revision to the tool itself, and an update of the 2009 Whitepaper that first introduced the tool to the field. Be among the first users to receive updated training and case studies!
