RESOURCE SPOTLIGHT

On January 13, 2013, MIT President L. Rafael Reif asked Professor Hal Abelson to review the Institute's actions arising from Aaron Swartz's use of the MIT computer network to download more than 4 million articles from JSTOR, a repository of research journals. Reif requested a thorough analysis of the Institute's involvement in the matter from the time that MIT first perceived unusual activity on its network in fall 2010 up to the time of Aaron Swartz's suicide on January 11, 2013. The review of MIT's activities followed, by two days, Swartz's suicide at his apartment in Brooklyn, N.Y. He had been facing 13 felony counts stemming from his downloading of JSTOR documents, and was scheduled to go to trial in April 2013.

On July 26, 2013, Professor Abelson and his team submitted their report to President Reif. Through this site, President Reif is sharing their report with the community. It offers direct access to the report, a letter from President Reif in response and a variety of documents, including an FAQs page.

Scenario Planning

One of the great perks of my new position as Vice President for Professional Program Development with The NCHERM Group is the ability to travel and be on the cutting edge of research related to threat assessment. This April, I was lucky enough to go to Scotland for a four-day training involving the new launch of Dr. Hart’s clinical risk assessment tool the HCR-20 v3. As part of this intensive training, Dr. Hart introduced me to the concept of scenario planning as it pertains to the world of threat assessment. I’d like to share this concept with you.

The National Behavioral Intervention Team Association announces the launch of its flagship, peer-reviewed academic journal, The Journal of Campus Behavioral Intervention (J-BIT). J-BIT is a multi-disciplinary journal intended to encourage academic research and scholarship regarding the function, design, operation, and assessment of campus Behavioral Intervention Teams (BITs) at two- and four-year colleges and universities.
